STEM High School Initiative for Educational Leadership Development

SHIELD Mentors gain extensive leadership and non-profit experience and build relationships with a wide cross-section of the community, including leading scientists and engineers. They will help advance our mission to embolden middle school students who possess a passion for biology, chemistry, engineering, and discovery to pursue their interests and strengthen the STEM community.

About STEM SHIELD

Southern Research is committed to fostering creativity and impacting the future generation. Ideal candidates are passionate about STEM education, motivated to grow as a leader and professional, and eager to gain experience working with students.

SHIELD is a two-week program where mentors are trained in STEM activities and leadership. The first week involves training and professional development seminars. During the second week, SHIELD Mentors will serve as counselors; teaching and helping middle school campers get excited about science, technology, engineering and math in our STEM’s Greatest Hits program. SHIELD Mentors gain valuable professional development and experience in a scientific laboratory.

2022 Dates

SHIELD Mentors attend the training session and are expected to arrive early and stay late on each day of the program. The program and training run from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. We provide a Southern Research STEM t-shirt and lunch each day of the training and program.

Location

SHIELD training and the STEM’s Greatest Hits program takes place in the STEM Education Outreach Center at Southern Research: 2000 9th Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35205.
