William J. Grieco, Ph.D., was named vice president of Energy & Environment in June 2015. He has 17 years of experience leading research and development organizations across multiple industries, including clean technology – photovoltaics, biofuels, renewable chemicals, and food production – pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and specialty materials. He has patented and peer-reviewed technical contributions in such diverse areas as alternative energy, nanotechnology, combustion, specialty chemicals manufacturing, and controlled-release delivery of therapeutics.
Before joining Southern Research, Grieco was director of innovation for Owens Corning, where he most recently led research and development for the roofing and asphalt business. Prior to that role, he created and led a team that focused on front-end technology and business development, including sustainable and energy efficient building materials, bio-based materials, and building-integrated photovoltaics. As part of this work, Grieco built and led a business and technology development team to create a Building Integrated Photovoltaic Solar Roofing system. He completed a multi-million dollar technology acquisition and partnered with the venture-funded solar startup Solexel to develop and commercialize a solar roofing shingle.
Prior to Owens Corning, Grieco was managing director and chief technology officer at Gardenia Ventures, where he and his team focused on specialty materials, biofuels and renewable chemicals, and nanotechnology. Additionally, he led technology development at the biofuels startup PetroAlgae.
Grieco received a doctorate in chemical engineering and a master’s degree in chemical engineering practice from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology.
