Matthew Merrell, Ph.D.
Senior Scientist, Toxicology
Matthew Merrell is a study director within the Toxicology team. In his role, he serves as a scientific resource in toxicology for planning and execution of nonclinical safety studies, where he designs, monitors, evaluates, and reports the results of preclinical safety studies conducted in compliance with Good Laboratory Practices. Additionally, he serves as study monitor for projects and studies subcontracted to other laboratories. He currently serves as principal investigator on government contracts for Southern Research’s Drug Development team. In these roles, he oversees the execution of contract research projects and studies in collaboration with scientific and technical staff to ensure that timing, cost, and quality targets are met.
Merrell earned his Bachelor of Science in physiology and developmental biology from Brigham Young University. He earned his doctorate in pharmacology and toxicology from the University of Arizona. He completed his post-doctoral work in pharmacology at Emory University.
At Southern Research, Merrell currently serves as vice-chairperson of the Institutional Biosafety Committee. His is a current member of the Society of Toxicology and former member of the International Society for the Study of Xenobiotics. He has co-authored 10 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts, and he is ad hoc reviewer for multiple publications in the pharmacology and toxicology industry.
