Paul Leufkens leads the Behind-the-Meter Energy Storage Testing program in Birmingham AL. He provides third-party testing and consulting services for the energy industry. Paul has 25+ years of international experience in the power industry working in capacities ranging from R&D management of cables and switchgear to general management of ultra-high voltage and energy storage laboratories to consulting services and business development.

Prior to joining Southern Research, he was president and founder of Power Projects Leufkens, providing consultancy, business services, and coaching to manufacturers, utilities, test & certification institutions, and consultancy firms worldwide. He led business development and generated business cases and project plans for new High-Power labs in Asia and the Middle East. He worked also with the ESTA International team in a 9-month project to prepare detailed planning and procurement for the $5 million implementation of a Smart Grid Test Bed project at CPRI in Bangalore, India, consisting of a Smart Grid Technology Demonstration Center and an Interoperability Testing Laboratory.

Leufkens also ran KEMA-Powertest, LLC the biggest high-power lab of the Americas with 40 people. He co-founded the nation’s first comprehensive cell-to-megawatt Battery and Energy Storage Lab and negotiated a multi-faceted second lab cooperation between DNV GL and NY-BEST in Rochester, NY. He chaired STL NA, the forum in which American short-circuit test labs discuss standardization and establish interpretation of standards relating to the international STL, Short Circuit Test Liaison. He also marketed, won the project, and provided executive management of design and engineering for a new $80 M high power and high voltage lab in Brazil (2012).

His scientific record includes peer-reviewed publications and contributions on a wide range of topics, from a new generation cable splices to generator circuit breakers based on vacuum technology and a recent presentation “Innovation is like a lightning-bolt” that was awarded best lecture at the IEEE Insulated Conductor Committee (2019).

Leufkens received his Master of Science Degree in electrical engineering from Delft University in Netherlands.
