Robert W. Hergenrother, Ph.D., leads AIMTech – the medical device development initiative at Southern Research, in collaboration with the University of Alabama at Birmingham, to develop and commercialize medical technologies. He has over 20 years of research, product development and managerial experience in the medical device industry, with a focus on biomaterials development and drug delivery systems.
Prior to joining SR in 2014, Hergenrother was the senior director of research and development for the medical device business unit of SurModics Inc., a company that develops and licenses surface modification systems for medical devices. At Target Therapeutics, a company that develops endovascular products to treat diseases of the brain (now Stryker Neurovascular), he was manager of applied research. He has been instrumental in the creation of over 15 new medical devices and technologies in the neurovascular, cardiology, diagnostic, wound care, and orthopedic medical markets.
Hergenrother holds a joint appointment at UAB as professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. He earned his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin and his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Notre Dame, both in chemical engineering. He has 21 issued U.S. patents and more than 20 scientific publications.
