Review and Approval of Meeting Agenda

The Chairperson called the meeting to order. The Chairperson asked the committee to

review the agenda. A motion was made to approve the agenda. A second was made, and

by voice vote the agenda was approved.

Review and Approval of BPRs and Amendments

R25-09-017NS

Title: Production and purification of recombinant protein from DNA plasmid in bacteria,

insect, and mammalian cell

RS: Anwar Ullah

The BPRG was reviewed, comments and contingencies were received.

Contingency 1: Section 5.13a is incomplete.

Response:

BSL-2 box checked.

Contingency 2: For section 5.14a, should it be 10% bleach?

Response:

Changed to “The bacteria will be treated with a 1:9 bleach-to-water solution (Pure Bright

bleach solution (sodium hypochlorite (6%)) solution for 1 hour before being discarded into the

sink.”

Contingency 3: Section 6.4d is incomplete.

Contingency 4: For section 6.6a, what is the animal cells or tissues species, strains, and

quantity for all?

Response:

Checked “Bacteria” box and added “(E. coli BL21 DE3 strain)”.

Contingency 5: 5.11 (e, f): If there are no in vivo activities, uncheck the “NO” box.

Response:

Boxes unchecked.

Contingency 6: 8.4 (e, f): uncheck the “NO” box.

Response:

Boxes unchecked.

Contingency 7: Section 1.6: (b) Have the facilities to be used for this project been

inspected to ensure that they are appropriate for the cited Biosafety Levels? If NO, then you

MUST contact the Biological Safety Officer regarding inspection prior to initiation of the

work. – Has this been completed?

Response:

It has not been completed since we have just moved the BSC and the shaker incubator to

NRB. Steve will make sure the inspection is completed.

A motion was made to approve, a second was made, and by voice vote the BPR was

approved.

The next Institutional Biosafety Committee meeting is scheduled for Thursday, 09 Oct 2025

at 11:15 am in Birmingham.
