Director, Laboratory Operations
Deborah Gohegan oversees the daily scientific and administrative operation of the central repository group, animal care group, in vivo staff, and in vitro staff at Southern Research’s Frederick, Maryland, and Birmingham, Alabama locations. She is responsible for coordinating scheduling and training of in vivo and in vitro laboratory staff and monitors the progress and execution of work performed by technical personnel. She coordinates the operation and maintenance of the animal research facility and oversees the operations of laboratory space and equipment, ensuring strict adherence to all applicable federal guidelines and regulations and Southern Research SOPs and policies. She is certified as a Laboratory Animal Technologist by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science.
Gohegan has 27 years of experience in the laboratory animal research field. She joined Southern Research in 2004, after serving as animal facility manager at the National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, Bethesda, Maryland. She is chairperson of SR Frederick’s Safety Steering Committee, vice chairperson of the IACUC, and a voting member of the IBC/BPRG committees.
Gohegan is a member of several professional organizations including: the Laboratory Animal Welfare Training Exchange, the Laboratory Animal Management Association, the National American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, and the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science. She holds a Bachelor of Science in biology from Virginia Tech.
