About NextGen STEM Academy

Welcome to Southern Research’s NextGen STEM Academy, a dynamic summer experience designed to ignite curiosity and foster a love for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in 7th – 9th grade students. This engaging program offers a unique opportunity for students to explore the wonders of STEM through interactive activities, real-world problem-solving, and hands-on experimentation.

Throughout the camp, participants will engage in collaborative projects and challenges that encourage critical thinking and creativity. Guided by passionate educators and mentors, students will dive into exciting STEM concepts and gain practical skills that will inspire their future learning journeys.

ELIGIBILITY

Students must be rising 7th-, 8th-, or 9th-grade students.

REGISTRATION

Registration for NextGen STEM Academy will open February 10.

COST

The registration fee for NextGen STEM Academy is $50. This helps cover the cost of activity materials & supplies, lunch, and a t-shirt.

DEADLINE

Registration for NextGen STEM Academy will close on May 12, or when all spots are filled, whichever comes first. There will be a waitlist for each of the 2 weeks.

What is the cost of NextGen STEM Academy?

The registration fee is $50 per student.

Is the registration fee refundable?

Yes. If your student can no longer attend, full refunds are available for cancellations no less than two weeks before the registered week of NextGen STEM Academy. No refunds will be issued for no-shows or cancellations within 2 weeks of the date of the event.

I would love to attend, but I cannot afford the $50 fee. Are there scholarships available?

Yes, there are! Please contact Shon Essex at dessex@southernresearch.org, subject line: "NextGen Academy Scholarship" for more information.

What are the hours of NextGen STEM Academy?

The active hours of the camp are from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Students may be dropped off as early as 8:00 a.m. each day and must be picked up by 3:00 p.m.

Will lunch be provided?

Yes. We will provide lunch each day of the camp.

Where will NextGen STEM Acadamy be held?

Can I attend NextGen STEM Academy with a friend or sibling?

Yes. Each participating student must complete the Eventbrite registration to secure a spot in NextGen STEM Academy. Please be sure to register for the same week.

Do you provide transportation?

No, we do not provide transportation. We encourage carpooling if you are able.

I am currently in 6th grade, can I apply?

Yes. We are accepting current 6th grade students who will be in 7th grade during the 2025-2026 school year.

I have little to no experience with STEM. Can I still apply?

Yes. You do not need any prior experience with the topics we will cover during the camp—you’ll learn all of these things during the camp!

How do I know if my registration went through?

If filled out correctly, you should receive a copy of your registration via email. This email will contain your "ticket" to attend NextGen Academy. If you did not receive a confirmation email or message, please email stem@southernresearch.org.
